Every spring, after the last hard freeze and before the irrigation systems come back online for the year, the outdoor plumbing on a typical home needs about thirty minutes of attention. Most of us don’t give it that. We turn on the spigot for the first time, see water come out, and assume everything’s fine. By the time problems become obvious (wet spots in the lawn, oddly persistent green patches, water bills creeping up), the leak has often been running for weeks. Sprinkler systems and irrigation
If you have automated irrigation, the spring check expands. Before reactivating the controller:
- Slowly open the main shutoff valve to the irrigation system. Listen for hissing.
- Walk each zone visually while running it manually for two minutes. Look for:
- Broken or geysering heads (winter damage)
- Heads watering pavement instead of plants
- Wet spots between heads (buried line break)
- Heads that don’t pop up at all (blocked or broken)
- Heads with weak spray patterns (clogged filters or nozzles)
- Check that the rain sensor (if installed) is still connected and functioning.
- Update the controller schedule based on your climate’s spring needs, typically shorter and less frequent than summer.
The buried-line problem
Buried irrigation lines crack from freezing more often than people realize. The water comes out, but instead of going to a sprinkler head, it pools underground or pushes up through a small fissure in the lawn somewhere. The telltale signs:
- An unusually green or lush patch of lawn that doesn’t match the surrounding area
- Soggy ground that doesn’t dry out even between waterings
- Bubbling or hissing when the system is running
- Heads downstream of the break flowing weakly while upstream heads flow strongly
Repairing a buried-line break is a half-day DIY project for a confident homeowner, or a one to two hour visit from an irrigation contractor. It’s worth doing immediately: a small buried leak can waste 500 to 2,000 gallons a day.
Frost-free improvements worth making
If your outdoor faucets aren’t frost-free, consider upgrading. A frost-free hose bib extends 8 to 12 inches into the heated portion of the house and shuts off the water flow at the indoor end, preventing freeze damage. The most reliable way to confirm the whole outdoor system is watertight is at the meter. Turn off every fixture and appliance in the house, walk out to the meter box, and note the exact reading (or watch the small low-flow indicator dial spin, if your meter has one). Some areas (California, Arizona, Nevada, parts of Colorado) run aggressive programs; others have minimal offerings. Worth a quick check before any significant purchase.
