A rain garden is a shallow planted depression, typically 6 to 12 inches deep, designed to capture and slowly infiltrate runoff from a roof, driveway, or lawn. When it rains, the depression fills temporarily. Within 24 to 48 hours, the water has soaked into the ground, watering the plants growing there and recharging local groundwater. When it isn’t raining, the rain garden looks like a regular ornamental bed: slightly sunken, planted with deep-rooted natives.

It is one of the prettiest ideas in residential water management. It addresses two problems at once. It reduces stormwater runoff, which causes erosion, flooding, and water pollution, and it creates a thriving plant zone that needs almost no supplemental irrigation. For homes in regions with regular rainfall, a rain garden can quietly replace tens of thousands of gallons of irrigation water across a year.

Why rainwater is leaving your property

On a typical suburban lot, most rainfall doesn’t actually soak into the soil. Roofs, driveways, walkways, and compacted lawns shed water into gutters, sidewalks, and streets, where it flows to storm drains and eventually to creeks or rivers. By the time it reaches a water body, it is carrying lawn fertilizer, road oil, sediment, and other contaminants picked up along the way. This is a problem on three levels:

Where to put one

The right location for a rain garden has three characteristics:

  1. It receives runoff naturally. Below a downspout, at the bottom of a slope, near a driveway edge where water sheets across pavement.
  2. It’s at least 10 feet from the house foundation. Closer creates basement water problems.
  3. The soil drains within 24 to 48 hours. Test by digging a 12-inch hole, filling with water, and seeing how long it takes to empty.

Most yards have several candidate locations. The best one is usually downslope from the largest source of runoff (often a roof corner with a downspout).

Sizing the garden

A general rule of thumb: the rain garden should be about 20 to 30 percent of the area draining into it. So if you’re capturing runoff from 400 square feet of roof, the rain garden should be 80 to 120 square feet.

This is approximate. In sandy soils that drain quickly, the rain garden can be smaller. In clay soils that drain slowly, it needs to be larger to handle the same runoff volume.

Construction basics

Building a rain garden is a weekend project for a typical 100-square-foot installation:

  1. Mark the outline with a hose or spray paint. A loose oval or kidney shape works well.
  2. Excavate to 6 to 12 inches deep. The deeper end is on the upslope side; the downslope side has a slight berm to hold water during storms.
  3. Loosen the soil at the bottom with a garden fork to help infiltration.
  4. Mix in 2 to 3 inches of compost throughout the excavated area.
  5. If the soil has high clay content, add coarse sand to improve drainage.
  6. Direct runoff into the garden using a graded swale from the source, a buried downspout extension, or a channel of river stone.
  7. Plant with appropriate species for the moisture zones.
  8. Mulch with shredded hardwood mulch (not floating bark, which washes out).

The three planting zones

A rain garden has three distinct moisture environments:

Native species adapted to your region are the right choice. They have the deep root systems that make rain gardens function and the resilience to handle alternating wet and dry conditions.

Keeping the basin healthy season to season

Rain gardens require relatively little upkeep once the plants are established:

  • First year: Water during dry stretches to establish plants. Weed regularly while the planting fills in.
  • Annually: Cut back perennials in late fall or early spring. Refresh mulch.
  • After major storms: Check that the inlet isn’t blocked with debris and the overflow path is clear.
  • Every 5 to 7 years: Sediment may accumulate at the inlet. Scrape and remove it if it is blocking flow.

That’s it. Once established, a rain garden largely runs itself.

What it looks like during a rainstorm

The first time you watch your rain garden fill during a storm is genuinely satisfying. Water that would have run down the driveway and into the gutter instead pools in the planted depression. Within an hour or two after the storm, the visible standing water is gone. Within 24 hours, the soil has reabsorbed almost all of it.

The plants love it. The deep-rooted natives, designed for this, thrive on the periodic deep watering. The garden looks lush and full through the growing season with almost zero supplemental irrigation.

The neighborhood arithmetic

Across an entire block or watershed, rain gardens scale up in significance. A 100-square-foot rain garden captures roughly 27 gallons per inch of rain. Across an average year, that is 800 to 1,500 gallons per garden. A street with twenty rain gardens captures 16,000 to 30,000 gallons annually that would otherwise have gone to the storm drain.

This is why many municipalities now offer rebates for rain garden installation. The infrastructure cost saved, in fewer drains, less treatment, and less flooding, exceeds the rebate cost. A typical rebate is $200 to $800 depending on garden size.

Many U.S. water utilities offer rebates that significantly reduce the cost of stormwater upgrades like rain gardens. The rebate picture varies dramatically by region. Some areas (California, Arizona, Nevada, parts of Colorado) have aggressive programs; others have minimal offerings. Worth a quick check before you break ground.
