The food coloring test

  1. Lift the lid off the toilet tank.
  2. Drop 5 to 10 drops of food coloring into the tank water. Any color works; dark blue or red show up best.
  3. Replace the lid.

  1. Turn off the water supply to the toilet (small valve behind the toilet, usually on the wall).
  2. Flush to drain the tank.
  3. Unhook the chain from the old flapper.
  4. Remove the old flapper from its mounting tabs (usually slides off).
  5. Slide the new flapper onto the tabs.
  6. Reattach the chain, leaving a small amount of slack.
  7. Turn the water back on, let the tank fill, and flush a few times to test.
