Water pressure is one of those things most homeowners never think about until something feels wrong: a shower that is too weak, a sprinkler that misses spots, a faucet that takes forever to fill a pot. The diagnosis usually happens at the symptom level. The underlying cause, which is often something specific about your home’s water pressure, does not get examined.
Understanding water pressure is one of the more useful pieces of basic plumbing literacy. It explains why certain fixtures behave the way they do, predicts which problems are likely, and lets you diagnose issues without immediately calling a plumber.
What water pressure actually is
Water pressure is the force pushing water through your plumbing system, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). It is what makes water flow out of your faucets and showers rather than just sitting still in the pipes.
The pressure originates at the water source, either the municipal water main feeding your home or, for well water, the pressure tank that stores water under pressure for distribution. From there, it flows through pipes to fixtures, dropping slightly as it goes through each connection and bend.
The normal range
Residential water pressure should typically be:

How to measure your pressure
A water pressure gauge ($10 to $20 at any hardware store) makes diagnosis simple:
- Find an outdoor hose bib or laundry connection, anywhere you can attach a hose-thread gauge.
- Make sure no water is running anywhere in the house.
- Screw the gauge onto the spigot, hand-tight plus a quarter turn.
- Open the spigot fully.
- Read the gauge.
Take a few readings at different times of day. Pressure can vary based on demand on the municipal system or well pump cycling.
The symptoms of low pressure
Common signs of low residential pressure:
- Weak shower spray, especially in upstairs bathrooms
- Slow-filling pots and water containers
- Multiple fixtures losing pressure when another is in use
- Irrigation sprinklers that do not reach their full radius
- Washing machines that take a long time to fill
- Toilets that take a long time to refill after flushing
Causes of low pressure:
- Old galvanized pipes with internal corrosion restricting flow
- Mineral buildup at fixture aerators and showerheads
- Failed pressure regulator stuck in restricted position
- Partially closed main shutoff valve
- Municipal supply issues (rare, but possible)
- Failing well pump or pressure tank (for well systems)
The symptoms of high pressure
High pressure is more damaging than low pressure because it accelerates fixture wear and increases leak risk:
- Banging pipes (“water hammer”) when fixtures shut off
- Frequent faucet washer failures
- Toilet fill valves wearing out quickly
- Appliance hose failures (washing machine, dishwasher)
- Water pressure relief valve frequently dripping
- Misting or fogging from sprinkler heads
Causes of high pressure:
- No pressure regulator installed (common in homes with very high incoming pressure)
- Failed pressure regulator stuck in fully-open position
- Thermal expansion in closed water heater systems
Fixing pressure problems
For low pressure
The fixes depend on the cause:
- Clogged aerators or showerheads: Unscrew, soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes, rinse, reinstall. Restores most lost flow at individual fixtures.
- Partially closed shutoff: Verify the main shutoff is fully open. Sometimes it has been bumped or partially closed.
- Failed pressure regulator: Replace the regulator. About $50 to $150 in parts plus 1 to 2 hours of plumber labor.
- Old galvanized pipes: Whole-house repipe. Major project ($4,000 to $15,000) but transforms water performance.
For high pressure
The standard fix is a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) installed where the main water line enters the house:
- Cost: $50 to $200 for the valve, plus 1 to 2 hours of plumber labor
- Function: reduces incoming pressure to a safe range (typically 50 to 60 PSI)
- Lifespan: 10 to 15 years before replacement
If you already have a PRV but pressure is still high, the valve has likely failed and needs replacement.
The thermal expansion issue
One specific pressure problem worth understanding is thermal expansion in water heaters. As water heats, it expands. In an older “open” plumbing system, this expansion pushes back into the municipal supply. In a modern “closed” system (with a check valve or backflow preventer), the expanding water has nowhere to go, and pressure spikes within the home.
The solution is a thermal expansion tank, a small tank installed near the water heater that absorbs expansion volume. Cost: $40 to $100 for the tank plus installation. Required in most modern installations.
Without it, water heater pressure relief valves drip continuously, fixtures wear faster, and pipe joints fail prematurely.
Pressure and conservation
The connection between pressure and water conservation:
- High pressure delivers more water per second through fixtures, even with “low-flow” hardware
- High pressure also wastes water through misting at sprinklers and through accelerated fixture wear (and resulting leaks)
- Optimal pressure (50 to 60 PSI) supports both efficient delivery and equipment longevity
A home running at 90 PSI without a regulator uses meaningfully more water than the same home at 55 PSI, even with identical fixtures and behaviors. Installing a PRV is one of the higher-return conservation upgrades for homes with high pressure. The EPA WaterSense program lists fixture flow ratings that assume in-range pressure, so a PRV also makes those ratings realistic in your home.
The well water case
Homes with well water have their own pressure dynamics. The pressure tank stores water under pressure for distribution; the well pump kicks on when pressure drops below a set point and shuts off when it reaches an upper limit.
Common well pressure problems:
- Pressure tank that has lost its air charge (causes rapid pump cycling)
- Failing pressure switch (incorrect on/off pressures)
- Aging pump (gradual pressure decline)
- Iron or mineral buildup in pipes
