Mulch is one of those quietly effective garden moves that doesn’t get nearly enough credit. It costs almost nothing, requires no skill to apply, and reduces garden water needs by half or more across an entire growing season. Compared to drip irrigation, smart controllers, lawn replacement, or any other water-saving infrastructure, mulch is the highest return on investment in residential outdoor conservation.
And yet most home gardens are under-mulched. Beds get a thin sprinkle of bark in spring that disappears within weeks. Vegetable rows get no mulch at all. Tree wells are bare around the base. The result is a garden working harder than it needs to, with the homeowner watering more than they should.
What mulch actually does
Mulch is a layer of organic or inorganic material on the soil surface, and it does several things at once:
- Slows evaporation. A 2 to 3 inch layer reduces moisture loss from the soil by 50 to 70 percent.
- Moderates soil temperature. Cool in summer, warmer in late fall. Roots prefer stable temperatures.
- Suppresses weeds. Weeds compete with desirable plants for water. Less competition means less water needed.
- Improves soil over time. Organic mulches decompose into the soil, increasing its water-holding capacity year by year.
- Reduces erosion. Surface runoff in heavy rain is slowed, allowing more water to soak in.

Wood chips are underrated
If you have access to free arborist wood chips, and most homeowners do through services like ChipDrop or by asking local tree-trimming companies, they’re the single best mulch for most garden beds. They cost nothing, last 1 to 2 years, decompose into good soil, and look natural and well-kept once spread.
The myth that wood chips “rob nitrogen” from the soil is mostly false. They only affect nitrogen levels where they touch soil directly, and only briefly. As long as you keep them on the surface rather than mixing them into the soil, you’re fine.
How thick to spread
Two to three inches is the sweet spot for most mulches. Thinner doesn’t suppress weeds or slow evaporation effectively. Thicker can cause water to run off rather than soak in, and can suffocate plant roots if piled against stems and trunks.
The exception is the “volcano mulching” mistake: piling mulch against tree trunks in a cone shape. This rots the bark and invites disease. Mulch should always taper down to nothing as it approaches stems and trunks, leaving the base of each plant exposed by 2 to 4 inches.
When to mulch
Late spring is the prime time. The soil has warmed enough that early plant growth has happened, but the heat of summer is still ahead. A 2 inch mulch refresh at this point captures the water-saving benefit through the entire dry season.
Avoid mulching in early spring before soil warms, because the mulch insulates against the sun and keeps soil cold, slowing plant growth. Wait until daytime temperatures are consistently in the 60s.
A fall refresh of about an inch added to existing mulch keeps weed suppression strong through winter and prepares beds for the next year.
Mulching the lawn
Yes, the lawn benefits from “mulching” too, in a different sense. A mulching mower returns grass clippings to the soil rather than bagging them. This contributes nitrogen, slows evaporation slightly, and reduces fertilizer needs over time.
Don’t worry about thatch buildup from mulched clippings. Grass clippings decompose quickly and don’t cause the thatch problem that some homeowners worry about. The benefit is real and the downside is essentially nonexistent.
What not to mulch with
- Rubber mulch. Doesn’t decompose, leaches chemicals over years, doesn’t build soil. Save it for playground surfacing if you want, but not garden beds.
- Dyed mulch with chemical colorants. The dyes are usually benign, but the wood underneath is often from unknown or treated sources. Choose undyed natural mulch.
- Fresh sawdust. Does tie up nitrogen at scale, and forms a water-shedding crust. Avoid.
- Whole leaves piled thick. Mat down into a water-impermeable layer. Chop with a mower first.
Keeping mulch working through the year
Most organic mulches need refreshing once a year. Walk the beds in spring and check thickness with a stick or finger probe. Anywhere it’s thinned to under an inch, add an inch back.
If weeds are pushing through, the mulch is too thin. Add more rather than fighting individual weeds. If water seems to bead and run off rather than soak in, the mulch may have developed a water-repellent crust; rake it lightly to break the surface.
The water bill, before and after
For a typical 500 square foot garden bed in a hot climate, going from unmulched to properly mulched cuts summer water use from roughly 60 gallons per week to 25 to 30 gallons per week. Across a four-month dry season, that’s a savings of 500 to 600 gallons per bed.
For homes with multiple beds, the cumulative savings often exceed 2,000 to 4,000 gallons per summer, achieved with about $40 worth of mulch and an hour of labor. The EPA WaterSense program estimates that outdoor watering accounts for nearly a third of household water use in many regions, so any reduction here shows up quickly on the bill.
If you’re not mulching, start. If you’re mulching too thinly, add more. It’s the single most cost-effective conservation move in the entire outdoor toolbox.
How mulch payoff shifts by region

Mulch benefit is genuinely local. The same 2 inch layer buys back far more water in a hot dry Western yard than in a Pacific Northwest garden where rainfall handles most summer needs. In desert climates, gravel or decomposed granite can outperform organic mulch because it doesn’t wick moisture upward as it decomposes. In humid Southern states, pine straw resists matting during rainstorms better than shredded bark. The principle of covering bare soil transfers everywhere; the material worth spreading changes.
